Headway vs Martina(Kevvan)
Re: Headway vs Martina(Kevvan)
I don't understand how my comment was arrogant. At a certain level in the game everything becomes predictable, you just press buttons in a certain sequence reacting to what your opponent does, the pace is never really challenging, whereas in those fights they had to be on the ball all the time. It surprised me and made me excited, like the first time I saw people doing ShS tricks and fucking with people in TBC. I don't watch Wrath and Cata videos, where people who were great in TBC have probably evolved into far greater players, so that's where my perspective comes from, as someone who only watches TBC videos mostly.
Maybe you think it's an arrogant statement because you think I'm a shit player or something like that, which I can understand. But as far as my skill level goes I basically played through a couple of years of TBC, quit WoW until late Cata, then joined this server on a shitty mobile broadband stick until november 2011, and have been playing on/off since then. So it's true that I'm not a great player, far from it. But I do feel that I play my class to the best of my ability and really give my all in PvP. And when I'm really into the game and playing seriously I think I play ret as good as it's possible to, I'm always searching for an advantage or a way to get better. The videos I've released are all dogshit, they're not meant to be serious or taken seriously, but people misunderstood that. I think I'm a good player, I just don't have any focus. But that's probably because I don't dedicate 10 hours a day to competitive arena. But I love PvP movies, I've always watched them and loved them and admired the really skilled players. But there's definitely a skill-cap when it comes to TBC. Or at least I thought there was until I saw that video, that was exciting as hell.
Also, I'm really embarrassed for Headway, that video is shameful. You raped him with that link. He should know better than to post that, I just hope it's a joke. I think he's a good Rogue, but yeah, that doesn't make him look good. RvR is a joke when racials come into play.

Re: Headway vs Martina(Kevvan)
It has nothing to do with your skills. I don't mind the skill level of a player. I would be quite arrogant if I did. There are players who aren't as good as me, but there are also players who are leagues better. The only time bad players bother me is when their pride makes them think they're better than they actually are. And there's quite a lot of them around here.
If you only watch old tbc movies I understand. The players who were great back then would have been average today, decent at best. There are some tbc movies floating around with good players, but they're made at a later stage on private servers, where the skill cap of the game has developed.
I do have to disagree with you when you say that everything becomes predictable. That depends on your opponent. At a certain point in the game developing your meta-gaming becomes more important than getting better at your class. Take these guys for example. They've perfected their class when it comes to rvr, and they can't really react any faster than they do. To develop their gameplay they have to constantly fool eachother. They can't afford to be predictable, since the only thing that would determine the outcome of the fight would be rng. Not saying that rng doesn't play a role, but their gameplay weighs a lot more. They would never be able to reach that point if they only relied on their skill with their class.
The difference between a good and a great player is meta-gaming. You can become however skilled you wish with your class. If you don't have the meta-gaming to back it up, you'll get stuck at being a decent player at best. That's what determines skillcap today, meta-gaming. Not your skill with your class, since that's limited.

Re: Headway vs Martina(Kevvan)
Well I've always thought of myself as very diverse in 1v1, I always do anything I can to win like I said. The problem is there isn't much challenge, and the challenge there is in other classes is so overwhelming that if they brought their meta gaming into it I would be crushed. It's a hard life for a Paladin. I should reroll Rogue. ;_;

Re: Headway vs Martina(Kevvan)
The only thing you can do to develop your skills with your class, and your meta-gaming in duels is to have rules. You can't expect to develop if you shave 70% of the the opponents hp off in a global, without him being able to do much about it except to pop cd's which he'll have to have available in a later stage of the fight, or use consumables that brings out-of-class abilities to the table that nullifies your opponents gameplay. Facing an equal, or better player with rules that makes the duel more balanced is the only way to go. Sometimes this involves certain profession being used, or more offensive gear. But quite a lot of times it goes the other way around.
That's the main problem I have with the gear level, and the profession availability around here. It's dumbing down the game, replacing the skill level of the player with abnormal amounts of damage and extremely overpowered out-of-class abilities.

Re: Headway vs Martina(Kevvan)
The thing is though, those dudes in the videos - if they was fighting anyone else it would just be rape. Same with me I guess. It really isn't as OP as people think it is, I'm not one-shotting everyone, my duels last a fairly long time and it's always very close. I'm full ret with PvP gear now and it sucks haha.

Re: Headway vs Martina(Kevvan)
It most likely would be rape against quite a lot of players. But that's because they're good, not because they compensate with bullshit.
One of the best ways to become better in a game is to be the underdog. Then you have an obstacle to overcome, and there's two ways to do this. One is to compensate with dumb shit to make the fight more "balanced", as people prefer to call it around here. The other way is to get better at what you do.
People are too afraid to die or lose around here. And with the accessibility to said dumb shit, it really does hurt the gameplay. Tunneling and zerging replaces tactics and smart gameplay in a lot of cases. Just because you lose in a duel doesn't necessarily mean you're a bad player, or haven't developed your game. But people tend to think it does.

Re: Headway vs Martina(Kevvan)
Well, the buffs I use are really only for BG's, a stat pot is all I really need for dueling and is pretty much standard for everyone, I'm fine dueling with nothing though. I just use that stuff in BG's because it's fun. I'm sure for those Rogues it must be boring fighting RvR for the 2304203940th time when they know exactly what is going to happen 5 seconds ahead. At that stage two decent players are basically equally matched, the only difference being who gets the jump, or who makes a mistake. It's like when I fight a feral as Ret, if that feral goes bear the entire time he will beat me no matter what I do, including if I use lay on hands and potion, no joke. I need to hope he goes caster or speed shifts so I can catch him or I'm royally fucked. I'm sure plenty of Rogues on their server say they're shit because of their use of that opener, even though they're good. Finally, I'm not afraid to lose or die, I duel anyone and everyone, and constantly challenge feral druids for the challenge even though it makes me suicidal.

I'm not talking about you specifically. I'm talking about smolderforge in general.

Re: Headway vs Martina(Kevvan)
This stat potion makes more difference than you may think. Take flask of pure death for example. The fire/frost/shadow damage it adds is the same difference as you being naked to equipping two s4 parts. It adds more damage than the difference between the s2 caster dagger and sunflare. Add a wizard oil on top of this and it gets quite a bit more retarded.
