2vs2 Disc Priest/Mage Guide by Zat
2vs2 Disc Priest/Mage Guide by Zat
So wassup. I'm Zat, I've won 3 seasons on this server playing Priest/Mage and I'm about to write a guide to help you guys play the comb succesfully.
Starting with some basic stuff:
Races:
I'd say undeads are superior to the other races overall. Alliance races are just less suitable for this combo. Troll Priest is good, so is Blood Elf Mage... but that's only better in some situations, overall I'd definetly go UD.
Specs:
- Mage http://wow243.gamestool.net/maget.php?2 ... 5010241301 This is the best spec for the comb, there are some variaties with arcane meditation or I dont know what else but it's not worth it.
- Priest http://wow243.gamestool.net/priestt.php ... 0000000000 I'm using this, there's another way to spec wich is more offensive, giving up Enlightenment for Force of Will and Holy Reach for Improved Divine Spirit. I prefer my spec due to 5% spirit, bigger range on holy nova and smite and all, pick yourself what better suits you.
Gear:
- Priest, well go mainly for spirit gemming mostly 11 healing 5 spirit, gul dan when available and 30 - 50 spell hit and between 390 and 440 resi.
- Mage, just focus mainly on haste, you can afford to drop some resi(not under 260).I run 72 spell hit currently but it's just never enough, you can go up to 100 if possible, more wouldn't be worth it cause you'll drop other stats I guess.
Macros:
- Priest
#showtooltip
/castsequence reset=target/combat Power Word: Fortitude, Divine Spirit, Shadow Protection
That's simply a macro to buff everything with 1 button, what's more important is this macro:
#showtooltip
/castsequence reset=target/combat Power Word: Fortitude(rank 1), Divine Spirit(rank 1), Shadow
Protection(rank 1)
The same thing with r1, you'll need this alot while playing priest/mage, and not only. It's used for dispell resistance after your or your partner's buffs have been dispelled. You should also bind r1 innerfire, touch of weakness, abolish disease etc etc, I don't have a macro for them but you can make 1 similar to this I guess if you want.
#show inner focus
/cast inner focus
/cast devouring plague
Inner focus macro, got the same1 with Greater Heal.
#showtooltip Shadowfiend
/cast [nopet,harm][nopet,target=targettarget,harm] Shadowfiend
/petattack [harm][target=targettarget,harm]
Self explanatory Shadowfiend macro.
#showtooltip Shadow Word: Death
/cast [harm] Shadow Word: Death(Rank 2); [target=targettarget, harm] Shadow Word: Death(Rank 2)
this one replaces your Shadow Word: Death, it's normal swd just if you are targeting a friendly target it will swd his target.
/cast [target=party1] Dispel Magic(Rank 2)
Dispell party1 macro, got self dispell macro wich is this:
/cast [target=yourcharactername] Dispel Magic(Rank 2)
And the same two macros with fear ward.
/cast [target=focus] Shadow Word: Death(Rank 1)
/stopcasting
This is focus SWD macro, I'm using r1 instead of r2 on it to save some mana since I'm only using it to swd polies or blinds etc, never to dmg.
Power infusion+Gul dan in 1 button macro and also switch between casual weapons and spirit staff macro... I think they are obvious.
- Mage
#showtooltip summon Water Elemental
/cast [nopet][target=pet, dead] Summon Water Elemental
/petpassive
Pet macro.
#showtooltip Counterspell
/cast [target=focus, exists] Counterspell; Counterspell
Focus silence macro, you can add /stopcasting at the end if it suits you.
#showtooltip Ice Block
/stopcasting
/cancelaura Ice Block
/cast Ice Block
Block, removes your Ice Block on a second use.
#showtooltip [target=focus,harm] [] Polymorph(Rank 1)
/clearfocus [modifier:shift][target=focus,dead][target=focus,noexists]
/focus [target=focus,noexists]
/cast [target=focus] Polymorph(Rank 1)
Uhhh focus poly.
#showtooltip
/castsequence reset=target/combat Arcane Intellect(Rank 1), Dampen Magic(Rank 1), Slow Fall
Dispell resistance macro like the 1 I got on priest.
/cast [target=focus] Frostbolt(Rank 1)
Focus r1 Frostbolt
gul dan + Icy Veins in 1 button macro and ussual weaps to spirit staff macro aaaaaaaand I think that's all.
A macro to switch from your ussual weaps to spell pen weaps (staff or offhand + wand). It's just /equip macro. I'm not using it on SF cause something is wrong with resistances and I dont think it's worth it.
Once you've done this. F**k I got tired of writing this. I shouldn't have started.
Back ontopic...
Addons:
I suggest you use some cd tracker addons since you'll need to track your partner's and your opponent's cds, good addons are Aesa or Afflicted. What else I use as addons is Proximo, Focus Frame, Quartz, Interrupt Bar. I think that's all... that's some addons I can't imagine playing without. Or I can :D but they are pretty good.
lol
Once you've done all this learn how this game works :DDD. I don't think some1 who's playing the comb for a first time can run it properly since I've been playing it for more than an year now and I'm still learning and improving.
Tactics:
Here are some tactics to start with against different teams and since I'm mainly playing a Priest in Priest/Mage these tips will be mostly Priest PoV since I dont know how should I write it explaining both sides with details.
- Warrior/Druid
Start off going middle arena keeping some distance between each other, poly and dispell the warrior, fear ward on mage, then incase it's possible priest remounts and waits for the druid to pop out and fear him while the mage opens on war. Incase Priest has trouble fearing, mage should assist him by r1 frostbolting or blizzarding quickly. That first burst on the warrior has to make druid trinket or NS or both. Then you repeat that before the druid has his cds back, using cold snap and power infusion, devouring plague(don't waste that in the begining). You can also go on druid while fear depending on his and his warrior's positioning and cds. That's how it ussualy works, just a little rng can ruin everything tho, even if you've played perfectly. Once you fail turtle till you get our cds back for a new burst. That doesn't mean playing completely defensive tho, you have to keep harassing the druid, not leting him drink and keeping him r1 doted making him unable to prowl. Fear him in normal and burn him, poly him and keep r1 frostbolting him and burning him making him switch forms all the time. Then repeat and repeat until you succeed. After you have forced trinket on the druid lure war in the open field(never try bursting him or the druid while they are hugging a pillar) fear druid, dps war while using r1 mind soothe to eat reflects(wich goes for every war combo I wont be mentioning it in every comb). When fear is over silence and poly druid while trying to dispell NS. Or just catch the druid in a bad spot and illuminate him in 5 seconds :D:D.
- Rogue/Druid is similar, Start off going middle arena but hug each other so that when one of you gets saped the other one can try to nova the rogue out of stealth. Fear rogue while you are playing defensive (most of the time) or when you just know that you won't be able to fear the druid in the next 27 seconds or it just won't be needed... like for example if mage is sapped and rogue opens on priest fear him in the begining. Try forcing cloak without blowing cds when possible... and just burst turtle burst turtle repeat until rogue dies or druid messes up and you illuminate him in 5 seconds. You need high understanding of what's going on around you, track cds and have good coordination with your partner.
Random tip I forgot to mention: focus poly druid to interrupt cycloned/roots etc, it's easy to predict and pretty gamebreaking.
- Druid/hunter
Priest rushes in and dispells hunter eating the viper sting (most of the HDs will viper sting on the priest if he shows up and mage is still back and LoSing) and also try eating silence. Then just burst hard on the hunter. Priest has to fear druid(with mage's assistance) as fast as possible after he pops. Incase you fail after the cold snap then... it works out somehow. All fears on the hunter and try to get some mana, while hunter isnt in cc mage should hug him making him unable to shoot. Basically burst every evocation after that cause a good HD will hardly let you drink and will keep mage viper stinged.
- Lock/Druid
What you need to do is tunnel the druid and oom him, both of you. Mage should keep slowing him, cast frostbolts, r1 blizzard without wasting cooldowns or too much mana, that will make the druid go out of his form and then you fear him in normal and burn. Both you and your partner need to play perfectly with your mana and play safe.Let prayer of mending jump between you and your partner and throw some renews and dispells, thats enough to keep both of you alive.Rebuff with r1 when dispelled. Mage needs to cover his sheeps(offensive dispell resistance) with r1 frost bolt, cone of cold, etc. Soon or not so soon druid will be low on mana, you must never let him drink. Dispell innervate incase mage isn't able to spellsteal it. Wait until the druid is in a bad spot(open field) and preferably without barkskin, get a triple fear pet also(when possible), fear ward on mage and burst druid.
- Disc Priest/Lock
Tunnel the Priest. Simply run after him the whole game trying to put some pressure and burn him. Keep r1 doting him making it harder for him to dispell mage's slows and novas etc. Mage ccs lock covering sheeps. And ye soon as priest is oom just burst him and he should die. That's similar to druid/lock, abit easier I'd say, still a counter.
- Shaman/Warrior
I think that's rather obvious and simple, cc shaman and burst warrior. Fear ward mage before bursting, not right in the begining cause it will get purged. r1 dot totems(bugged on SF sadly so just get rid of them somehow). Incase you fail bursting make sure to keep r1 buffing yourself and turtle till you get your cds back.
- Paladin/Warrior
Also rather obvious I'd say. Cc paladin and kill warrior.Get rid of sacrifice before polying paladin. Gotta dispell bubble instantly, make sure you don't get noobpummeled on holy before he bubbles. Let mage spellsteal freedoms instead of dispelling it.
- Disc/Rogue
Rush in and fear the priest(avoiding getting sapped) and start burning him if he's UD to make him wotf then dispell, or just dispell him if he's ally or some kind of random troll or whatever. Rogue will most likely be on mage, dispell him and keep him doted all the time. That pretty much everything, stay aggresive on rogue constantly pressuring him and ccing priest.Rebuff with r1. If they go on priest stay rather offensive dispelling and doting rogue and stay open field letting mage cast on him freely and making him unable to reset (if not cloak vanish sprint or smth).
- Shadow Priest/Rogue
That's pretty much the same as Disc/Rogue that goes on the priest, it just ends faster no matter who the winning team is. Priest stays away from the pillars, keeping distance from the SP, keeps running the opposite way of the SP while mage slows him and polies him. Fear rogue, trying to fear sp would be useless. Dispell dot rogue and kill him before he kills you.
- Mage/Rogue
If they go on Priest it should look a lil something like this: Mage trinkets sap silence the opponent mage before he gets silenced his self and poly rogue-> poly mage(who who would've blocked the silence) ->open on rogue.Keep Block for blind, dont block Counter Spell. Priest could trinket first KS if it's needed for example if rogue cloaks I guess it's gonna be neccesary... After you survive the begining keep rogue doted and nuke him without letting him reset cause you'll be out of cds already and you'll most probably die if they get a new decent opener.
If they go on Mage then Priest just LoSeS/swd polies, dots rogue and keeps some distance from him, heals his mage while beign careful with silences.
- Rogue/Rogue
There's many different ways a rogue/rogue can play against you, If they go on mage it's easy. If they go on priest mage trinkets sap then priest just uses Power Infusion and Pain Surpression in the right time, spams last rank holy nova while mage spams last rank blizzard.Stay in open field all game, hugging pillars will make it times harder for your mage to kill someone while they won't have any problems f**cking you up. After they cloak dot both of them. If you do that in the worst case mage will be 2v1 against 2 rogues doted and slowed on 1-2k hp without any cds.Depending on the situation, the way RR blows their cds and positions, you can cc 1 of them and focus on the other 1, but ussualy just aoe both of them.
If they split between the two of you, act according to the situation, you'll have to focus on 1 of them and be careful how you blow your cds cause they can switch anytime.
-Priest/Mage mirror
The beginning is very important here, the team that manages to go offensive first and put pressure on the other team will most likely win. If in the beginning they hug their pillar, rush in and fear both, poly mage and start dispelling, poly priest while he's in global cd from dispell. If you both rush after each other silence the mage right away(possibly on poly cast), poly him-> poly priest right away, then dispell mage and burst him, that should make priest trinket. Then just try fearing the priest burn mage etc and reburst in the right moment.Dispell block instantly. Keep mage r1 buffed after he gets dispelled. It's pretty hard explaining how you are supposed to play against this, cause there's so much different stuff that could happen, you just need some experiance. Basically start properly, position properly afterwards, win the mana war, win the fear war.
Starting with some basic stuff:
Races:
I'd say undeads are superior to the other races overall. Alliance races are just less suitable for this combo. Troll Priest is good, so is Blood Elf Mage... but that's only better in some situations, overall I'd definetly go UD.

Re: 2vs2 Disc Priest/Mage Guide by Zat
3 things :
1. rebuffing with rank 1 shadow prot aint always a smart thing to do, r1 pwsp is like 200+ mana, that' can not be wasted. you gotta be 100% sure it worth it.
2. sup with switching fear ranks? vs wd or rd that might be very usefull, why didnt u write about that?
3.
/cast [target=party1] Dispel Magic(Rank 2)
Dispell party1 macro, got self dispell macro wich is this:
/cast [target=yourcharactername] Dispel Magic(Rank 2)
And the same two macros with fear ward.
"yourcharactername" < "player" =
/cast [target=party1] Dispel Magic(Rank 2)

Re: 2vs2 Disc Priest/Mage Guide by Zat
If the fear ranks was the only thing you had to add then sorry but... I don't know how should I express myself...? GTFO?
I wrote that the guide is incomplete, there are alot more imporotant stuff to add than the lol fear ranks, I just didn't have the time.
And in 2v2 in SF I only use r2 fear.
The shadow protection is the last spell in the macro rotation for a reason, btw do you even have it binded? If you didn't learn anything from this guide, even tho you should've since I've played alot with you and there's quite some place for improvement in your playstyle, then it's better not embarassing yourself with useless hating comments.
No comment about your dispell macro criticism, what's more simple than ''your character name'' >< idk hows the official way to call your character name my macro is /cast [target=zatbeast] dispell, now stay small.
Please don't turn this into a flaming/trolling thread. Since I find this really useful I will try to keep it clean but if more comments like the ones above this post keep coming I will have to delete it.
