New server? More info inside

Post by Henhouse »

Hi, everyone. So I've been caught stating that our server is actually very good hardware, but any core lag is usually just due to the poor programming on the core and occasions where the program bottlenecks itself. This is still largely true, and honestly the only way to make that any better is possibly getting a better processor. Doesn't matter how many cores because the core doesn't even have multithreading support, so that's useless anyway.

However, we are currently renting a server setup for 109 euros a month and we get the following specs:
Intel Xeon E3-1270 (QuadCore, 3.40 GHz)
16GB RAM
2TB HDD | HW RAID 0/1
100 Mbps Internet Connection
4TB traffic cap (we've never been close to going over)
Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands

I've had OVH bookmarked for about 1.5 years now after hearing about them, and it seems they've launched a huge line of newer server recently for insanely good prices, with also fully professional DDoS protection that usually cost a lot to have added on, but they provide it for all their servers.

Anyway, for the much cheaper price of ~100.49 (VAT added) euros a month, we could get:
Intel Xeon E5-1620v2 (Quad, 3.7 GHz / 3.9 GHz burst)
64 GB DDR3 RAM
2x 2 TB SATA3 HDD (maybe could look into getting SSD)
300 Mbps connection
Traffic: unlimited
Location: Northern France
First server listed here:

The OVH server comes with a 99 euro installation fee though. However this is waived if you pay for all 12 months upfront, roughly ~1600 euros. Of course, that is committing that we'd still be renting 1 year from now.

I've sent an email inquring why the US version of the site does not allow someone to rent a server located in the EU, but the EU sites allow renting from Canada. Seems a little odd, additionally if I rent from the Ireland website, for example, I must pay 23% VAT, which VAT isn't a thing in the US. So I've emailed them asking what is the best option for someone like me looking to rent a server within the EU. Hope to hear back.

Anyway, would like to know the community's comment on this. Essentially the server is a lot better. Despite there being 4 times the amount of RAM, that will not speed up the server. We maybe use, 3, 4 GB of ram? It's honestly just a waste. Only beneficial thing is the better processor and nice connection with DDoS protection.... yet we've only been attacked 1-2 times so won't be too essential. Either way, it only is a better deal if I pay a year up front to waive the installation fee just about. So I may consider that route.

I suppose that if they don't let you rent from the US, it's because they reserve it for EU firms.

How is your current invoice ? duty-free ? In France and in most countries in EU, they don't have to pay the VAT for an export to the US (you, in the US, are non-taxable). It implies that it's without VAT for you.
Therefore, it'd be clearly less than 1600€/year.

Waiting on the people to email me back. I sent them proof of my address so they remove the 23% VAT tax off of the order. Then once I place the order it will take several days for them to set it up, then a little bit for me to prepare the server, and then plan maintenance to migrate everything over.

Server I've ordered differs from the one I listed because I realized it wasn't needed. HellGround runs on the exact same server I ordered, less RAM (that much RAM will never be needed) and less space because I got SSD which performs much faster than normal hard drives, so overall I think it's a great server, better processor, etc., and cheaper which is always a nice plus too. Looking forward to getting our stuff upgraded.

Update on this:

So my original ticket got closed and when I emailed them it went into the void and they never wrote me back. Contacted them about 3 weeks ago and got some guy saying the ticket was lost and they would "remove the VAT within 24 hours". I replied a few days later asking for an update and got ignored again.

However, I checked today and if I login and place an order the VAT actually finally does get removed. So within about a week I'll be placing an order and making preparations for the server move to this better, upgraded server located in Northern France.

Updates will follow close to time!

Here's a map showing where we're moving to.

PS: This is the same datacenter and company that both AT and Hellground rent servers from, so don't worry about some horrible change in connection and they're a very reliable company from what I understand.

Order placed. Once the server is setup I'll begin setting it up, performing tests, optimizing everything and preparing the move.

When we do move the server it won't take very long (DON'T WORRY I'VE DONE THIS BEFORE, KIDS) it will be like a regular extended maintenance where the server goes down for a few hours in the evening American hours (~04:30 server time). And the databases will be reimported on the new server and brought back online.

Our front page will be mentioning this change. During our transition to the new server it is possible your DNS won't refresh to where the set realmlist will still point to the old server for a day or two. If this happens, we'll have instructions on how to temporarily fix this. Transition should be very smooth and almost unnoticed though. :)

Will have an official news post in the coming days.
