Gaming Rig specs.

Post by Imperium »

Put together these parts for a gaming rig. I'm retarded when it comes to tech, but I seriously need a new computer. And with a budget like mine I need to save. So I decided to build my own.

CD/DVD Burner/Drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827249078

Case & Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811147117

Harddrive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822152185

Video Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814125353

Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820148163

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813130583

Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115221

now can someone who knows anything about building computers tell me are these parts okay? Will they be compatible, should I opt for any upgrades? I did not link that I am buying a monitor, keyboard and mouse, and those items all together come to about 900~$ USD. I need to keep it below 1,000.

Get 2x 2GB ram sticks, and ditch that dual-core processor. If you remove the processor from your current build ($99), how much money is there left in the budget? IF you have enough left in the budget, I highly suggest getting a Core i5 2500k as your processor. If you order before the 16th, you'll also get 15% off the price.

With 4GB ram, 2500k (yours was a crappy dualcore, no point in getting a dualcore for a gaming rig anymore) and a HD6850 are sufficient for most games out right now. Some will run ultra, some won't (relies heavily on resolution), but they'll still run really good.

Got that fixed; but the budget is over by about 120~$
Maybe I should downgrade the monitor?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6824262011

I think I'm playing with a 17" right now, so.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6824009230

That dropped my down into the 900$ mark, but just barely. At 998 right now. I'm stuck on my keyboard and mouse, really don't want a smaller monitor than 17"

Wonder if there's something else I can budget on.

Your hard drive is extremely expensive. In mid-2010 when I built mine it was a 1TB and I bought it for $79, they're probably lower than that now. If you're going to get all freaky with speed (and we're talking few seconds here) that is going to cost you out the ass.

Also, Quad Core is really not needed. I know you'll have some nerds here try to argue that but there's literally no games that support Quad cores, so you're only ever going to use 2. The reason that you'd ever need a quad core is for Windows shitty performance so it can keep up with itself (which won't fix the software horribilities -- new word). For example, if you get a Quad core I can tell you right now to expect your WoW screenfreezes to go up ~500%+ because WoW 2.4.3 was not fully optimized for dual core yet and ESPECIALLY NOT quad cores, in 2008 dual cores were just starting to become mainstream popular when Wrath came out which supported it.

So your hard drive and processor could save some money. But getting a good processor is always a big plus but I just am still skeptical about quad cores since they really have no benefit other than the actual system itself.

If Riski is still around these forums he has an amazing website where he built an AMAZING gaming computer for like $700 because they find deals and pretty much put all these things together, what you need, etc. into tiers and you can save SO much money this way. Let me tell him to throw a link.

I heard there was a link requested. The site in question is http://www.hardware-revolution.com/ and it is one hell of an amazing website. The site is pretty easy to find your way around. It includes builds for a lot of different computer designs (gaming, server, etc.) and price ranges. Be sure to read everything he writes as a lot of stuff is important, and if you continue to check in on the site you can find high end replacements for parts at the best prices and he has even mentioned the reason for the dramatic increase in hard drive prices is because of a disaster in another country. They were much more expensive a few months back but have slowly declined over time. He usually updates around once a month so if you want the most up to date info you could wait and it shouldn't take more than a few weeks. Good luck!

This is the best resource if you're looking to build your own PC. Check out the resource section on the right or make a thread where people will find the best parts with links for your budget.

Another thing I have to add is that if your current monitor is 19" or bigger there isn't much need to upgrade to an LED one. I haven't noticed too much of a difference on my current 24" LED monitor that I bought a couple of days ago even after tweaking it in the NCP.

Hard drives are expensive atm because of the floods in Thailand that wreaked havoc on HD manufacturer factories.

And what comes to quadcores, if you're building a GAMING RIG and buying a dualcore you're doing something wrong. There is no point buying a dualcore for retail price when you'll have to upgrade it soon.

^dis guy knows his shitz

Seriously, for a gaming rig quad cores are a must, a lot games profit massive from 3rd core, some even from 4th and with the prices being so close, its better to spend few bucks more and get something futureproof too.

WoW is a bad example, a game from 2004 obviously doesnt need a quad but on the other hand, WoW prolly could run on current high end phones if somebody would bother to port it. :s

Not to mention when you go from dual-core to a quad-core, you don't only gain two cores, but way higher clock speeds and cache.

If the Core i5 2500k is out of your budget, you should change your motherboard to support AM3 processors and get an AMD Phenom II X4 960T. The 960T + 6850 will be great for gaming aswell.

edit: theres PLENTY of games that support more than two cores btw. And will be alot more soon.
