Possibly buying a new server

Post by Henhouse »

So lately SF has been having a lot of problems and while we were running fine with no lag over the summer with 410 people. I feel a lot of the problem is just the database maybe is getting bogged down with data that needs to be cleaned away. It's been a long time since our last character prune (we delete characters and accounts that are over 9 months inactive) I feel like doing this, dumping and reimporting the database would really help since it would be able to re-categorize everything, etc.

Since these maintenance's usually take ~8 hours I would probably need to bring up that free brutal temp server players seem to enjoy. To do this, I cannot run that temp server on the actual server I'm performing maintenance on since it will slow it wayyyy down. If I buy a new server, instead of waiting for us to start running Wrath for example, I would still have ~1/2 month of the server we own now to use at my disposal. With this, I could do that. Temp servers are important to show idiots that we're not dead or down or deleted or whatever they start thinking when we're offline for that long.

Our current server is very good, so it's a little strange we're actually moving. I want to try this over company though, leaseweb since they seem good and their prices are about the same as DediServ which we're on now. Our server currently has 16GB of RAM and we've probably never used more than 5. It's just been extremely unnecessary and a waste of a lot of money each money.

So I can get a server with a better processor but 8GB of RAM which should be completely sufficent and we'll actually save like 9€ a month... lol.

Here's what I'm looking at: http://www.leaseweb.com/en/dedicated-se ... rator/2295

Thoughts?

There have been a little laggy recently.
Feels like that since the event started, it has begun, just as when the AV time was.

I can only say its worth a try :D

Considering that CPU load isn't at 100% atm, it's probably useless aswell to have a better one =P
Anyway, it's quite an opportunity to check it out, so got for it. Saving money is always great.

Those 9 bucks saved/month could be donated to a "poor peasant fund" for people like victort or whatever he was named! No Iranians allowed.

I went to look today and apparently they've like run out of those processors so... I can either wait or do something else. :\

Either way I think the performance will increase loads when I can perform these cleanups on it, not necessarily the hardware. This was a way to GET an improvement, for cheaper and allow us to have 2 servers for a time being in which I could put a temporary server online. Hmm...

Well funny enough this server selection was like sold out or something and a few days ago another one, exactly the same popped up. But now it's... gone? I swear the go out of stock fast...

I have to let the company know we're currently renting from that I will be leaving 15 days prior to my next billing period, else I am subject to having to pay another month. It's about 5 days until my next billing period now so I have only a certain gap window I can do this in. :\

So, you'll have to pay this billing period? The one that comes in 5 days? Then how long can you wait to give the 15 days notice? I mean, how long AFTER you pay for this period, do you have to wait? Nvm thats even more complicated.

How long does this "subscription" last? 30 days?
