Poll: Real "Warden" Implementation

Talk about anything here, related to Smolderforge or not.

Poll: Read below and tell us, does this sound like something we should do?

Yes, implement the real Blizzard-like Warden. It seems to be stable and will help auto-suspend players who try to hack.

Poll: Real "Warden" Implementation

Post by Henhouse »

So, for a while now MaNGOS has been working with getting a functional real Blizzard Warden for a while. For those who do not know what it is, Warden is a program that runs within WoW. It's running every time you're playing the game, scanning your RAM to see what is attached to the WoW process if you're using any detected cheating/hacking programs.

Our "warden" is really just an coded anti-cheat which does lots of checks for things that seem strange (flight/speed out of no where, etc.) However MaNGOS only got the data checks from the 3.3.5a client so they are not entirely relevant. However, it's been ported to Trinity and Oregon already and some minor checks have been worked on for 2.4.3. This includes WoWEmuHacker checks and possibly others.

From what I've been told it's 100% stable and is 100% producing valid checks with WoWEmuHacker and possibly other hacking engines designed for private servers. So my question to the community is, do you guys want to see us implement the REAL Warden along side our anti-cheat? I believe this can really help out to some degree and eliminate faction/wall hackers that are not so easily detected by us.

Sounds good, the only bad thing I can think of is that some people might lose their ability to switch models, or crap like that. And maybe interference with different lines of code checking for the same stuff, but that will be tested anyway I guess.

I vote yes, and here's why; I believe in a fair gaming atmosphere. I don't want to get killed by the same asshole numerous times only because he does infinite damage. I don't want Warsong Gulch to be over in a 4 minutes because someone glitched before the start of the map, on top of speed hacks. I don't want all that. Better protection (usually) means a better gaming experience.

That being said, I am reluctant with my vote. In my past experience with various private servers I've (rarely) noticed odd things happen. One particular TBC server I was on had me kicked every 5-10 minutes for speedhacking, more than likely a result of high latency at the time and poor coding of their anti-cheat system. That server's issues is one of the reasons I came to Smolderforge.

In short, I suggest a test run. Try it out for a few weeks. If there are excessive complaints about instability, drop it and wait for a good run.

The only other issue I could possibly see would be that it's checking your system out, and only hyper-security sensitive people should have an issue with that. This isn't an issue with me. :P

I think that's a fantastic idea. I have two problems with it though.

1.) It's the Wrath warden... in Wrath they made it so you couldn't use naked mods. Not like model changers, but re-skins. I know I'm not the only one with naked mods.

2.) You said "Alongside" your warden. With your warden, you can't swim underwater and occasionally while you're walking it'll port you back to where you were several seconds prior. Then you can't move or you'll be ported back to that same spot. The only way to fix is to mount and then dismount. If you're indoors, you need to re-log. It sucks. Your warden just ruins movement. Sorry :/

But a REAL warden would be an amazing asset for the server and also the entire TBC community, since most serious private servers use Oregon core anyway.

Useedat? See #2. And Henhouse, I don't think I mentioned this because I knew what it was and so I figured you'd let it go like the diving thing.

i would say Yes AND no.

Yes its a real improvement for the server.
but will it also increas the lag?
its already getting worse as it is at certain times.
and if this i gonna make it worse i would say no.

We'll have to find out and see really. If it was considerable I would probably not like it -- it only really should take up a little CPU usage checking packets and stuff but I don't think it would make too much of a difference. Like I said, we'd have to test.

Here's a preview video of how the Warden is reading WoWEmuHacker memory injection. Notice the checks are only like every 10 seconds or so.

Sorry for the not-amazing quality, I downloaded some random video recorder. Used to my really nice and easy one on Mac...
