Smolderforge PTR (Public Test Realm)

Post by Henhouse »

I think I'll be putting up a PTR over the next few days when I am finished with the project I'm working on.

I've been trying to get patches for these bugs we have on MaNGOS, however, none exists but I've been trying to rely on someone to make them for us. Subway was a great help with Wound Poison but he won't be able to help with every patch. Primez was suppose to look into the MaNGOS repo but he has bandwidth restrictions until 2AM(which isn't bad...) but he's to lazy to download it! :P

Anyway, I was able to find the same AntiCheat patch (Warden) mirrored over to TrinityCore. So I've been learning to use the HG-Mercurial repo system which is like SVN and Git together. So I had to learn the commands to type into the command prompt to get it to merge patches, and a lot of stuff, etc. So I edited the code to flag our areas as sanctuaries. The compile was a success, I just need to look into making Smolderforge's database work with it.

So the PTR (When we do it) will be a copy of all the accounts made since 6PM EST on June 6th. No new accounts made since then will be able to apply in the PTR. The purpose of the PTR will be to test out how much stuff it working correctly on Trinity compared to MaNGOS.

FAQ:

If you're converting to Trinity, why not convert to ArcEmu/Ascent/Aspent?
- Trinity is basically MaNGOS. It was a project started by user-developers to better work on the MaNGOS core for things the things that were never fixed/implemented into the real MaNGOS. So converting to Trinity should be like Windows 98 to Windows XP.
If you actually migrate to TrinityCore will we lose all of our characters?
- That is IF we do migrate. If we have to lose our characters -- no we will not transfer. I am not sacrificing 150,000+ characters for this.
What all does this fix?
- I am not sure... I believe they've fixed the spell bugs in it, that's what I've heard at least. If it fixes nothing this test will be a fail.
Will our characters be copied to the PTR?
- No. That's too much data to transfer for one little test.
Will the database be the same on the PTR?
- Should be, only about a month ago. So no stuff recently added like the banker. It's a backup I had on this computer so it was easier to use than to copy right from Smolderforge when people were playing on it. It might not be the "same" in things working though. But I'll probably try to notice the major problems right off the bat. If there are so many problems we just won't even do the test.
A little off-subject, but is the real Smolderforge going to 3.x in the future?
- No. I actually don't even want it to. I've run Smolderforge since 2.3.3, and updating is really, really annoying. If we're able to get a bug-free core, and in-a-while a better server then I will be so happy staying with that. It's much easier not to have to continue working on patch updates. Any chance of 3.x will be a new server.

-- Update --

Sorry, but I spent about 3 hours today working on this and when I finally got it to run with a lot of database changing there were numerous problems. You cannot interact with any NPC, all vendors "don't like you" and 1/2 of every gameobject/npc that I spawned are not there. In addition game events are not even working.

So like I had told people before, it would literally be impossible for us to switch at the moment without me having to re-write everything I wrote on Smolderforge which would take days of time which I'm not willing to dedicate (days meaning all 24 hours).

Lets just hope we can get some fixes for our current core.

Finally I will leave you with a perhaps applicable quote about statistics.
