What makes shamans so hard to play is probably the heavy reliance upon totems. I unfortunately only play restoshaman on a "avid" player level.

There are four types of totems:

Earth, Air, Fire, Water.

I will point out every totem and tell you best situations to use them:

Fire:
Searing Totem - Used for single dps'ing targets
Magma totem - When stealthed units are around. Not advised to use for AOE dmg in BG's as it is mana punishing (600+ mana?...yea alot). **Use RANK 1 ONLY**

Earth:
Earth Bind - AOE slow for 70% (i think). Our basic form of CC is slowing movement
Tremor - Removes Sleep, Charms, and Fear. Pretty much counter CC. Use when warlocks/priests/ sometimes warriors are around as they are the few classes that can fear. **Be aware of Hunter and Druid CC though**
Stone skin totem - Basically break a bit of dmg, great for when groups are taking lots of dmg from +4 melee classes. Beyond that this totem is not usually advised.
Stoen Claw - totally useless, unless ur enemies dumb.

Air:
Agility totem - use when around rogues/hunters/feral druids
Windfury totems - use around classes that use slow weopons such as warriors/ret pally's
Wrath Air totem - use around any spell casters or healers as the 101 spell dmg/healing helps
Windwall totem - lower range dmg taken. Use in the presence of Hunter. Same rules apply like Stone skin totem...only physical range dmg.

Water:
Healing Stream totem - Use when kiting/you find fights are slow and under control as this is very mana efficent over time
Mana Spring totem - gives you mana every 2 seconds, use this as you'll find 400 mana heals drain you fast.

This is just off the top of my head. um i'll get back to you with more info...hoped i kinda gave you start :P

stoneclaw isnt really useless.. its like 20 mana for r1 so you can use it in between switching the earth totems vs ppl that are just instantly targeting new totems that you use.. stoneskin isn't for ranged dmg o.o. It's good vs rogues in some situations due to 40 or 50 dmg reduction is pretty fine vs 200-300 white hits

PvP Essentials

Fire:
Searing Totem - Most use on: Warrior - eats spell reflect / Shaman - eats grounding totem and lightning orbs / Rogue - keeps in combat during blind (even if rogue kills it after a blind that is still a 5 second combat timer that is refreshed)

Magma totem - Place for Stealth target's especially after vanish. Go for magma totem + heal, will force average rogue to attempt to open again

Nova totem - Good for burst damage when target is close and at around 40%. When Playing as elemental shaman and going for an unforeseen kill this is essential. When talented a Nova totem coupled with a Lightning Bolt/Chain Lightning + Nature's Swiftness/Lightning bolt/Chain Lightning can bring a very quick and surprise death to your opponent.

Earth:
Earth Bind - Snare

Tremor - Removes Sleep, Charms, and Fear. Keybind it and spam it because good lock's and priest's will kill it before using fear

Stone Claw - Very good in arena against locks, use to taunt locks felhound and stun it when you know it's silence is up. Also, good for the occasional totem killing player.

Strength of Earth - Really only useful when playing enh or buffing a melee friendly while having complete control of fight. Always better to be using your snare when up and watching for possible fears.

Air:
Windfury totem - Warrior and Ret Pally's best friend

Wrath of Air totem - Ele/Resto sham+caster's essential buff

Grounding totem - LEARN IT, USE IT, LOVE IT

Grace of Air - Same as Str of earth

Water:
Poison Cleansing Totem - A MOST FOR ROGUES

Mana Spring totem - Stack with water shield at around 40% mana. PvP resto shaman should always be drinking! Your heals and totems are not mana friendly but if played right a resto shaman can take a beating regardless.

All these totems are a most. Others are useful but these are the essentials.
