Mutilate

Hi, I recently specc'd combat mutilate and i'm loving it despite it lacking the mobility and extra cd's of shadowstep. I really think it has potential to be a viable specc when played well, which is something i am learning and hoping to find more out on here. Hopefully there are some more experience mutilate rogues willing to share their tips and tricks with me, maybe see me in-game sometime for a few duels.

I notice the biggest disadvantage i have when playing mutilate is not so much being behind the target or the poison requirement as it's lack of mobility leaving me vulnerable to kiting and focus fire, and even more so falling short against shadowstep rogues. I don't want to have to play shadowstep just to win all the time, it's become boring to me and i've found mutilate to be far more entertaining.

While I know little to nothing about rogues, my rogue is mutilate, and I was always told that shiv is the key to mutilate.

Just like Sub have different daggers ready to go for offhand, you need to shiv a lot as mutilate so a 1.4 should be your main dagger but if you want to absolutely maximize damage a 1.8 should be ready for a double mutilate in a KS for example (I usually keep Wound on it). Nothing you can do about the lack of mobility it's simply how the game works against Mut rogues, remember not to have minor speed as it replaces your talent for move speed and makes you slower (I usually have 12 agil/3% crit damage meta and Surefooted boot enchant), and don't be too obsessed with damage as far as gearing goes. Never drop your 4 piece s4 for anything, the 120 energy is too good for Mutilate to drop. You have to know where you energy is and what you can do with it at ALL times.
