I just received some shocking and frustrating news today. I was going to wait to reveal the information, but I do have some updates. We've been talking with our ISP, Charter, about getting a dedicated IP for direct Internet streaming, etc but sadly they don't do that. But we're still trying to see if we can up what we already have.

Back when we upgraded to 80 players, we upgraded the Internet to 10mbps. When I announced to the server we would disconnect as it was upgraded, a guy whispered me and claimed he worked with cable companies. He apparently called, or looked up some information about Charter. He told me, they are 1MBPS upload on the 5MBPS and 10MBPS download, but 2MBPS on the 16MBPS download. Since we asked Charter if their download/updates rates were the same and they said yes, we believed them and not this guy.

Now Charter has upgraded their 16MBPS download to 20. We've noticed NO difference on Smolderforge...

We find out today, that guy was right. Smolderforge has been running on a 20mbps download and 2mbps upload. That's 20 megabits which is around 2.7megabytes. (8megabits = 1megabyte) Our upload is around 200kilobyes/persecond. That's horrible. I'm amazed we hold 100 people on that crappy of an upload.

That means Smolderforge is receiving all your data INSTANTLY, but it literally is queued back out to you all. I'm really frustrated to be lied to by Charter and we're going to try to work with them to see if we can actually get this upload problem fixed if it's possible. Even it it's raised by 2mpbs, that's 200 player cap. Or I would make it 150 for no lag. So if it was LIKE THEY SAID 20mbps upload/download I'm estimating we could hold 600-800 people. Possibly more without going dedicated and wasting so much money. I'm flabbergasted.

Charter actually has some of the highest rates in America for it's price. 20mb download 2mb upload for only $25USD is apparently amazing. However, almost NO IPs can beat that sadly. I need faster upload, why can they not provide that? Their business stuff doesn't even beat Charter.

The United States once had the most powerful internet infrastructure in the world, but is quickly being passed by foreign countries, and one of the leading countries is Canada.

What do all of these countries have that make their internet so much better on a larger scale? They aren't run by business tycoons trying to make money as they are in the U.S. As many of you know, I live in the boonies and am stuck with satellite internet. Long story short, it's terrible. If I were in Canada I'd be using 50mb Fiber Optic internet. No matter where I lived because Canada doesn't operate on a "well, if we put the cable lines there, will we make money?"

I'm afraid to admit it but the US is slowly going to become a crazy country, already the higher ranks are doing anything they can to get their hands on money. In Canada, most everything is payed for by the government which is good, it's like here in Romania, if you go for a surgery in the hospital, you don't have to pay anything in most hospitals. The US is so much in debt, that it will rip off it's own citizens to get money.. But Obama is still trying his hardest to get the US out of the recession and he's not doing so bad.

I do not believe Canada has the most. When the 3.0.9 server was to be hosted by Wutzke in Canada, all their rates were exceedingly low. I checked again and it's almost over 100 dollars for 3mbps download. Possibly certain parts of the country. I believe Europe contains the fastest and cheapest speeds.

I would highly argue on the matter of Obama doing a good job with getting the US out. It took Bush 8 years to get the national debt where it was. He was trying to stop it and slow it while Democrats like Obama argued about it destroying the country. Whereas it took Obama 3 months to almost double that debt.

However, this is off topic and shouldn't really relate to the US but to the Internet problem.
