No matter how far away you are from your pet you can still cast health funnel. But it won't heal the pet if it's not in the "original" range. You also loose health when you're that far away, but none of it is being transferred to the pet.

It's from Drain Life / Mind Flay range bugfix. You could abuse the range and it's just not fixed on Health Funnel, the visual range that is.
