FPS Drop

Post by Srfz »

Hello,

I'm back playing on Smolderforge (I used to play 3-4 years ago) but there's something wrong now: every 5-6 seconds the game almost freezes, there's an instant FPS drop, something like 4 IPS for 2-3 seconds. It really makes the game unplayable so I tried to solve this issue but can't find the origin of the problem.

I'm playing on a MacBook with Yosemite (version 10.10.5) using Wineskin to play WoW. Weird thing is I also play on another TBC server (2.4.3 also) and I don't have any freeze there. Would you have any idea how to fix that?

Thanks a lot!

I would recommend trying the native macOS client. For years it didn't work anymore, but earlier this year it magically started working again... I posted about it here on reddit where you can find download instructions and steps to launch the game:

Oh that's great thanks! Good thing that you tried again a few months ago :).

I just finished downloading the macOS client, tried to open it, the screen goes black for 3 seconds, the WoW cursor appears for less than 1 sec and then the game closes. I also tried with the "Show Package Contents" way but ran into the same issue. Any idea?

Hm, that's what used to happen. It seems to be fixed as of High Sierra when I last tested. Works on Mojave too. Any way you could upgrade from Yosemite to High Sierra or Mojave? That's a few versions behind... Let's see, yeah 3 years behind High Sierra.

Do you know what year the MacBook is from? If it's still relatively new, it'll handle the update fine. In fact, High Sierra/Mojave were performance boosters, actually. But if it's a much older Mac, especially one with an HDD instead of an SSD, I'd recommend not upgrading.

Yeah it's a recent one, from 2015 so I guess there won't be any problem for upgrading. It's just that I have a lot of applications which might not work after the update, I would have to check everything before doing this. I'm also playing on another tbc server with Wineskin, not sure if it'll still work after I do that haha.

Warmane is the only TBC server that doesn't support the native Mac client, as far as I am concerned. So if that's the one you're referring to, it may not work but you can continue to use WineSkin. Personally, I've had better performance using PlayOnMac which you could check out too. It had the ability to fix issues where my mouse would cause my camera to go crazy.

There are a few sites out there that list app compatibility between macOS versions, which you should check out first. Then I'd recommend migrating up to Mojave then.

Yes it is, it works perfectly there with WineSkin for me but yeah I'll try PlayOnMac to play here as well. Thanks for you help!

Update: I tried on PlayOnMac, everything went fine but from the moment I log on I have the same FPS drop every 5-6 seconds, exaclty like Wineskin, I guess it's related so it's not that surprising.
