Gurubashi arena, Fun Inspiration

Post by ediz91 »

Hi there!

I like to play on Smolderforge , when I have time to waste or when I am bored. Some days I really enjoy playing PVP in battlegrounds or kill something in a dungeon with other players.
But sometimes it feels something is missing. I spend most of my time in Tanaris, gearing or waiting for battlegrounds. I usually never go out in the wow world, which is a little ironic because it is of course you know, huge, there is no world PVP.

I remember in the old days when I was playing on a private server, which called themselves Dominion wow. This server, like many others, was a fun server. You could buy whatever you wanted, T6, T5 old pre TBC gear, even Warglaives. Also this server had something I really thought was fun, they had world PVP.

The most favorite place of playing world PVP was "Gurubashi Arena". People played there every day, and I remember, it was the reason I stayed on that server, because it was so much fun.
Sometimes the arena area was dominated by the Hordes, sometimes Alliance and sometimes it was contested. But inside the Arena, everyone was enemies.
It happens sometimes players teamed up, to take out the group, who was currently the king of the Gurubashi floor.

I will try explaining as much as I can with pictures, how their Gurubashi arena looked like.

First of, this was a pure PVP server, so Stranglethorn Vale was a contested area.
Hordes and alliance came to the Gurubashi with custom teleport NPC, like we have here on Smolderforge.

Alliance spawn was at the south gate:

Hordes spawn was at the North gate:

This is a perfect spawn location for the two factions:

Now you may think the contested area would be the arena ground itself, but it wasn't. It was actually more fun, when they increased the contested area radius, from the arena grounds being the center, to the arena stairs:

Outside the red line is the safe ground. Here you are green and safe and can recover from your enemies:

This is what they had on their server and I loved it, very fun indeed.
Of course we do not have to do exactly like this. You could make some events too. Perhaps spawn a chest with valuables? People could team up and fight for it, with honor!
Or perhaps the idea of making STV faction contested is not a wise idea. I agree sometimes It could become boring when the faction sides were uneven, resulting in a too dominant faction controlling the area and having fun killing each other within the player contested arena.

I just wanted to share this, because I really miss the times in the arena.
Hope you like my suggestion to make the server more fun.
I would be happy to hear what you think about this idea.
I guess a suggestion of Gurubashi arena has already been discussed and declined, because people would team up, and no one would dare to enter it. But with increasing the radius, it makes other players dare to get closer. It actually worked quite well.

Thank you!

A good effort nevertheless, too bad.

Holy shit, a bro from Dominion WoW? Instant best friends.

Slo here. What was your name?

On topic:

I agree, Gurubsahi arena was tons of fun back in the days. But I don't think we have enough population for something like that at the moment sadly.

However, it is not unworthy of a try.

I knew there would probably be others who wrote about Gurubashi, but I thought no one had thought about increasing the radius like this.
It makes a bigger difference than you think with increasing that radius :).

Interesting :)! Well it is fun to meet someone who played on the very same server years ago. Nice to meet you.
Well I did not have any specific name like that in the game. But I had a rouge I played with a lot called: Darkztorm.

Well yes, the Gurubashi was so much fun, but do you think we are too low populated for it?
If we skip the faction contested area in STV, more people could battle in the arena, but perhaps it destroys the world PVP a little.

But with this many suggestions for the Gurubashi, maybe like you said it is worth i try. I would definitely go there and play while waiting for a BG or something instead of doing nothing in Tanaris :).

I promise you that won't be the problem. We've tried Gurubashi in the past and it's an HK farming nightmare.

In regards to your pictures, it is not possible to make that red area a safe zone. Technically the moment you step into the arena ground part is the FFA PvP "zone" and outside is the Contested zone. I cannot change that -- that's part of the game. Another problem arises from the fact that you can slowly walk forward where your character is slightly hanging off the ledge and enter the FFA area, but be on the wall. Casters abuse this, we get 10000 reports, we move "graveyards" up on the tops of the arena wall and yet still people find ways to abuse LoS and farm HKs and create a mess.

Trust me, Gurubashi was never designed for tons of FFA fighting. That is best left in a battleground.

I think you misunderstood me. Within the red circle (marked by the red line) is a player contested area, outside it is a safe zone. Which means you will become a green target outside the circle.
The old private server I played on increased the radius of the zone, from the arena grounds edges, to the edges of the stairs like the picture shows.

Of course it is not a fair play, because casters could abuse these safe areas, but they would mostly try shoot the people on the arena grounds, and they are there for one reason, they are powerful and unbeaten. What i mean is, there is a greater chance to beat the people on the arena grounds, because the increased radius creates more pressure on them.

Back in the days people teamed up to fight within the red circle. Teams vs Teams, some played solo and tried to kill players while they were busy killing other teams. Most fighting did not happen in the arena grounds. It happen around it.

It was a lot of fun indeed on the private server who used this, I thought maybe It could be fun on smolderforge. I bet if you played there 2 yeas ago, you would think it was a lot of fun as well :). But maybe it is not for Smolderforge

I think I heard you correctly with the line area. Even if we extended it, people would be trying to fight down in the arena, and up on the ledge, favoring casters and just causing a lot of chaos. I mean... I don't think the idea of mindless FFA PvP is shared between much of the SF community but it's possible I guess for us to do intentional mindless PvP scenarios as like events and have no HK gain attributed to characters to prevent the senseless farming of kills. But I wouldn't want this to be a 24/7 zone since it would become in case. Additionally, we would need an easy way for players to exit the area if they so desired.
